Movie News - Sydney, Star of the Silver Screen

Sure, Australia had it's own film... apparently (I never saw it). So too do other great cities in the world in the guise of Paris, je'taime and New York, I Love You. But SYDNEY UNPLUGGED is set to unite a dozen of Australia's best and brightest to create a film to highlight the culture and character of Australia's first city. Hey Melbourne, where's your star studded film?


OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: SYDNEY SET TO SHINE ON THE BIG SCREEN

Some of Australia’s most exciting and acclaimed filmmakers are bringing Sydney to the big screen in all its glory, in a film aptly named SYDNEY UNPLUGGED. A promotional clip of SYDNEY UNPLUGGED screened at Tropfest last night.

To be shot in the second half of 2012, SYDNEY UNPLUGGED is a film that will comprise of twelve stories. Each story will be helmed by a different director that will showcase Australia’s premiere city through a myriad of themes and storylines. Produced by internationally renowned director and creator of Tropfest John Polson, and Gary Hamilton (A Few Best Men), the depth and diversity of Australia’s filmmaking talent, both behind and in front of the camera will be on display.

Filmmakers Alex Proyas (Knowing), David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), Ivan Sen (Toomelah), John Curran (The Painted Veil), Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here), Liev Schreiber (Everything is Illuminated), Rachel Ward (Beautiful Kate), Ray Lawrence (Lantana) and Russell Crowe (Texas), will be joined by actors Anthony LaPaglia and Toni Collette in their directorial debuts, in creating the inspiring stories that will make up SYDNEY UNPLUGGED.

A self-described Sydney aficionado, Polson hatched the idea for the Sydney film when he met Gary Hamilton at the Cannes Film Festival in May. "It's no secret some hugely talented directors, actors and others either live here or are from here. It's about time this talent got together to tell stories that showcase one of the world's most beautiful cities. The people that have stepped up to take part in this project are beyond our wildest dreams" said Polson.

SYDNEY UNPLUGGED will illustrate the vibrant and unique cultural and social tapestries of life in one of the world’s most beloved and inspiring cities.

To be released in Australian cinemas by Icon Film Distribution in 2013, and sold internationally by Arclight Films.

Reese Witherspoon is having a moment and it’s a pleasure to see. It is so satisfying to witness that the actress who gave us the utterly original and terrifying, Tracy Flick, has still so many more surprises for us.
