Resident Alien: Welcome to Earth! Review

Image
Right now Jonathan Hickman is dominating the comic book sales charts with his own brand of science-fiction story. His creator owned titles such as The Manhattan Projects and East of West as well as his runs on Avengers and FF have all revelled in high-concept plot devices, epic threats and all encompassing settings. So it's no surprise that the relatively low key sci-fi story, Resident Alien by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, slipped under the radar of most comic book readers, myself included. It's a real pity that this miniseries hasn't yet gotten the attention it deserves as it is hands down one of the best comics I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It's right up there with classics such as Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns , admittedly not in scale or mythos, but very much on par in terms of the quality of writing and visual storytelling.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones - Review

Image
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is the first in a series of movie adaptations based upon novels by Cassandra Clare. Don’t worry I haven’t read the books either and I have to say after seeing this movie, I don't plan to. I checked out Harald Zwart’s bio (Director) and found that he’d directed Agent Cody Banks and Pink Panther 2 and well, yeah . When I read that Stephanie Meyer, of Twilight fame, said that this "is a world I love to live in." I cringed and considered what this could possibly mean.

Kick Ass 2 - Review

Image
John Romita Jr and Mark Millar’s Kick Ass is the only graphic novel I have ever read.   I came away from it with a slight glow, perhaps because it was my first, but certainly because I appreciated the storytelling style and the unique artistic style. Mathew Vaughn first brought Kick Ass to the screen in 2010 in a film which I adore – a true blend of meta-comedy, ultra-violence and pop culture references. Kick Ass 2 expands on the world of the first film in an interesting way but doesn’t quite achieve the same impact as its predecessor. Based roughly three years after the events of the first film, Dave Lizewski/Kick Ass (Aaron Johnson) has inspired a small army of regular folk to don costumes and take to the streets as crime fighters. Mindy Macready/Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) is now living with her godfather Detective Marcus Williams (Morris Chestnut) and is struggling after the death of her father Big Daddy. Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) has abandoned his alter e...

Beginners Guide to Gunpla with Tom from HobbyCo

Image
At last weeks Sydney Manga and Anime Show (SMASH) , I had the chance to speak with Tom from HobbyCo who filled us in on what's what in the world of GunPla. GunPla is a contraction or portmanteau of Gun dam Pla stic Model and is quite often given to any anime related plastic model kit. Following the release of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series in 1979 came a line of plastic model kits in 1980. Since its inception there have been hundreds of kits released of nearly every mecha design in varying sizes and levels of detail. Diving into the world of GunPla can be daunting so I had a chat with Tom to tell us where to start.

Red Obsession - Review

Image
Red Obsession, the latest documentary from Australian duo David Roach and Warwick Ross looks at the effect China’s economic growth is having on Bordeaux, one of the most iconic French wine regions. Whilst full of some beautiful photography of the French countryside and plenty of wine porn for those lovers of the plonk, sadly for me the film revealed more about the filmmakers' opinions of China than it did the plight of the French Wine industry. Ultimately I came away feeling the film missed it mark completely and ended up being a naive bordering on racist look at global economics.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Blu Ray Review

Image
Certain films demand to be watched on Blu Ray and generally, they're not exactly high art. G.I. Joe: Retaliation is such a film. Sure, it's may not be a "thinking man's film" but it looks and sounds fantastic. Sure, it has a touch of the Michael Bay's about it but none of the douchebaggery that would ordinarily accompany such a film... apart from a handful of Transformers inspired sound effects. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Roadblock (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) lead a team of Joe's on a tactical strike in Pakistan. After securing a cache of nuclear warheads all hell breaks loose which turns this paint by numbers movie into an action packed revenge flick.

Pain and Gain Review

Image
Sometimes you’ve got to be smart to get away with being stupid. Michael Bay’s latest offering Pain and Gain is proof that if a film is going to be silly and ridiculous it has to stay fully committed to make it work. Mr Bay has taken a break from his goliath Transformers franchise to tell the real life story of three jacked-up, protein-munching body builders who get embroiled in extortion plan which goes horribly wrong.
